About The Wilderness Society (South Australia) Inc
We work to protect, promote, and restore wilderness and natural processes across South Australia. Wilderness Mapping We have funded an Australia wide wilderness assessment to determine the extent of the remaining large intact ecosystems across the country. The Lake Eyre Basin Since the proclamation of Australia's largest ever national park in the MungaThirri / Simpson Desert we have continued to raise awareness of the need to remove the threat of fossil fuel industry expansion into this remarkable wilderness. In 2024 the SA government announced the essential retirement of over 3.5 million hectares of fossil fuel leases from within the new MungaThirri Simpson Desert National Park. Our campaign calling for the delivery of the policy commitment No further extensions to be granted for Petroleum Exploration Leases currently held by TriStar within and adjacent to the MungaThirri Simpson Desert National Park and the immediate retirement of the leases if/when TriStar withdraws, has been successful. The Nullarbor and Great Australian Bight We continued to highlight the need for urgency and the allocation of Commonwealth resources to assist SA with the World Heritage listing process. Kangaroo Island We continued to support a significant expansion to the size of the Seal Bay Marine Sanctuary on Kangaroo Island. It's home to one of the biggest and most important colonies of the Australian sea lion (Neophoca cinerea), now listed as an endangered species under national environment law. We continue to systematically work on the delivery of the many policy commitments for wilderness secured prior to 2022 South Australian election.
