National Trust Of Australia (Tasmania)

The National Trust of Australia (Tasmania) is governed by Tasmanian legislation, the National Trust Act, 2006 so is classified as 'other Incorporated Entity'. The NTT belongs to an international movement founded in England in 1897. It is one of seven National Trust organizations across Australia which have membership and community volunteer bases. Together the Australian National Trust organizations are the nation's largest charity advocating for the built environment. National Trust Tasmania was formed in 1960 and has been a leading advocate for Tasmania s heritage, encompassing individual buildings, historic towns, industrial heritage and natural heritage. The Trust s heritage lists became the basis for the Commonwealth Government s Register of the National Estate (1975+) and the Tasmanian Heritage Register (1995+). The National Trust of Australia (Tasmania) manages twelve historic properties across Tasmania s three regions. Eight of these properties are open to the public and play important roles in Tasmania's tourism economy, together with educating the public about conservation and our rich cultural heritage. These properties have significant moveable cultural heritage collections. Home Hill at Devonport is operated in collaboration with Devonport City Council. The Trust has a range of program partnerships including with Digital History Tasmania for the operation of the Convict Memorial at the Hobart Penitentiary. The Trust maintains conservation appeals for thirty heritage assets in community ownership. It runs a range of community and fundraising events each year including the annual Tasmanian heritage festival. Attracting public support for the care and activation of built heritage assets is a focus for the organization's charity work.
