Menzies School of Health Research is one of Australia s leading medical research institutes. Our staff are dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We are also a global leader in research focusing on lifethreatening conditions of the tropics. For around 40 years, Menzies has delivered research generated and translated knowledge and provided education and training that make a difference to the lives of people throughout Australia and across the AsiaPacific region. Key achievements and research projects in 2024 include: Premiering the What is MECSH? animation. This animation was developed collaboratively with several ACCHO partners to share information with expectant parents, families, and communities in their regions about the Maternal and Early Childhood Sustained Home visiting (MECSH) program. This program provides ongoing support for women and their families from pregnancy until their child s third birthday. Each partner organisation had a version made available which was tailored for their region with a local program name and translated into Yolngu Matha and Eastside Kriol. Launching a new Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) during National Reconciliation Week. Running from 20242026 the RAP serves as a key resource for the organisation, guiding activities that advance reconciliation within our research and policy work and with the communities where we work and live. Establishing a new team to provide peersupport and education for young people with type 2 diabetes in the Big Rivers Region. The first peerled diabetes education session developed through codesign process, was held in June. Developing a new Paediatric Bronchiectasis Action Management Plan (BAMP) to help families and caregivers monitor and manage their child s bronchiectasis symptoms and provides guidance on handling flareups and knowing when to seek further help. The BAMP was developed and used in a randomised control trial across three Australian sites (Northern Territory, Queensland and Western Australia) to determine the utility of the BAMP for the management of bronchiectasis exacerbations. Our Remote Health Systems and Climate Change Centre collaborating with Ngaanyatjarra Health Service to facilitate final outputs from the Tjilku Walykumunu Ngaanyatjarra Lands Child Health Study. The Study, conducted between 2020 and 2023, used mixed methods to describe yarnangu understandings of child health, explore clinical indicators and map social, cultural and environmental determinants of health. Hosting the 10th World Melioidoses Congress in Darwin in October, with 180 delegates from more than 20 countries.
