The object of the Society is the advancement and promotion of Science and Technology in the Tasman and Nelson region. This is accomplished by supporting, financially or otherwise, the organization or provision of a) meetings at which presentations are delivered which are of general interest in the fields of Science and Technology b) travel grants and sponsorships for local schoolchildren and young researchers to pursue their interest in Science and Technology c) the sponsorship and support of local school educational events such as School Science Fairs, and the promotion of similar events in this region. NSS is a branch of the Royal Society Te Apārangi. The Society's Astronomy Section has now become an Incorporated Society in its own right, and so is no longer supported by the NSS Inc except to promote events.
